Brake Pads & Rotors
The parts that stop your car — and the ones that tell you loudly when they are done.
Why it matters
Your brakes turn motion into heat, thousands of times a year. The pads are the sacrificial material; the rotors are the surface they bite into. When either wears too thin, the pedal gets longer, stopping distances stretch, and the steel backing plate can grind into the rotor — which turns a routine pad job into a full brake overhaul.
Signs it is time
- Squealing or grinding when you brake
- Pedal feels soft, spongy, or travels further than it used to
- The car pulls to one side under braking
- Steering wheel or pedal vibrates while stopping
- Brake warning light on the dash
If you wait
Worn pads wear rotors faster, and badly scored rotors cannot always be resurfaced. What would have been pads and a fluid check becomes pads, rotors, and sometimes calipers — often two to three times the cost, on a car you should not be driving in the meantime.
